The most marketing that any field needs in Nepal is marketing itself. The reason for such a statement is that even after so many years, the number of students in marketing specialization has not picked up in MBA program. The few reason that I could explore are as follows:
Conditioning from the lower levels: Teachers in schools have encouraged students with higher marks to take science and lower marks to take management and humanities. It continues in BBA where the teachers make students with higher marks take finance.
Dominant presence of Financial institutions: The market is dominated by financial institutions like banks and insurance companies. Most of these organisations didn’t even have marketing department up until sometime now. More over the burgeoning interest in share market also has fuelled the interest in finance specialization even more.
Marketing is misunderstood: Several students believe that marketing is just guff and there is no science involved to study. I don’t blame them either because marketing does suffer from positioning error. It is often misunderstood just as sales and advertising.
The other misconception that exists in students is that they have to be extroverts to take marketing. They should be good with people. They have to go door to door doing sales.
Moreover, the teachers teaching the marketing subjects have also showed lack of seriousness in the subject. One reason it is thought of as a guff is because the teachers have treated it like that.
Students believe they can work in marketing department even if they take finance but vice versa is not possible. So, they are trying to open both the doors with one key.
Can you think of the other reasons?
What in your opinion will be repercussion of such a trend? What can we do to make marketing more desirable?
